Up Close And Personal: Oldest House Kitchen-Garden Tours Begin June 3

NANTUCKET, MA: Join the Nantucket Historical Association at the Oldest House for an up-close-and-personal tour of its kitchen garden—a recreated seventeenth-century garden featuring plants cultivated during colonial times for culinary, medicinal, and aesthetic uses.

From June 3 to September 6, the NHA offers tours every Friday, 11 A.M.–Noon, led by Kathrina Pearl, NHA landscape and garden manager. Tours meet at the Oldest House, at 16 Sunset Hill, and are free for NHA members, $6 for nonmembers. For additional information, call 508-228-1894, ext. 0.

”We take a close look at the individual plants and talk about how they were cultivated and used in colonial times,” says Pearl, who researched and designed the garden based on traditional European “raised-bed” or “bed-and-path” layouts. “Kitchen gardens supplemented household needs, providing everything from chives, rosemary, and root vegetables for cooking to horehound, foxglove, and valerian for medicinal uses.”
